As the snow finally melts and we gear up for another year of outdoor sports like soccer, football and baseball we face the same old challenge. Spring cleanup and spring flooding! For those unfamiliar or who need a reminder, a typical spring day in Calgary looks like this:
6:00am: frost, -8
9:00am: sunny, +14
10:00am: overcast, +6
10:30am: torrential rain shower & thunder storm
10:45am: sunny, + 22
11:15am: severe hail storm, damage in the $thousands
12:00: chinook, windy & +26
1:10pm: 60mph wind and tornado warning to Airdre and Okotokes
4:00pm: warm front and heat warning, +33
8:30pm: blizzard, -20
I may be exaggerating-just slightly, but the truth is, prairie weather is very unpredictable and our lawns, houses, plants & flowers, vehicles, parks and recreation fields face the brunt of mother nature's fury each year.
A great solution, and one that Calgary is picking up on quickly, is adding synthetic turf to grass playing fields. Although more cost conscious than say, seeding and fertilizing, artificial turf saves a ton of money in the long run by helping to save on ongoing maintenance fees including grass cutting and re-laying sod each season. The benefits also far outweigh the initial expense as turf conserves valuable water, is robust, extremely weather resistant and helps to prevent unnecessary injuries from uneven terrain.
Following in the footsteps of Shouldice's turf plying fields is Rundle College Society, one of Calgary's newest schools to switch to synthetic turf and our most recent project. From the custom irrigation base system to the final infilling, the new football field took just over two months to complete and will be a huge advantage for those in amateur sports, among them, the extension of the regular playing season due to fewer rain outs.
So even if we do have to battle mother nature's boasts of tantrums this spring and summer, we will at least be prepared with some tough turf!
